Manually moving content between sites can be very cumbersome. Typically, this would require several dedicated content editors that copy and paste content page by page. This is without mentioning building page layouts, moving assets such as images and documents, and SEO side effects caused by restructuring. The more content you have, the more time this will take, resulting in a higher cost for migration. The primary goal of Epinova’s Migration Engine is to automate this process as much as possible, saving time and cost. After a series of startup meetings with Epinova defining content mappings, we then import everything to your new site.  

A content audit determines how and where content is built on your site. A website is typically built with pages; pages are built with properties and possibly content blocks. For example, if you have an “Article Page” page type on your existing site, we need to determine how many of these are published. By defining a list of content types and number of usages, we can see how your content is structured. 

Using what we know from the content audit, we can then prioritize different pages to ensure we have the best coverage to migrate the most amount of content to your new Optimizely site. This of course can depend on complexity, but this has been proven to be a good starting point. Another thing to consider during the migration is we have the ability to remove any un-used or legacy content, so there is a sanitation element to this as well.

As you can imagine, there are many factors to take into consideration. For example, access to current & new websites, content export capability of current websites, and the current progress of new websites we are migrating to. Oftentimes the new website is still being developed while we are running the migration. This is preferred for many reasons, but it does take a little time.

The easy answer is a lot of communication. At the beginning of a migration, there is the audit and planning phase, often times requiring several meetings. This is followed by the migration/mapping phase where we connect all the dots. We have also found that having solid communication with developers on both your existing site and your new Optimizely site is critical. This allows us to investigate and solve any issues quickly. 

  Yes, you can. We treat the migration phase as an iterative process. Meaning there will be many content migration candidates produced while we refine the content mapping to the new site. As we get close to finalizing these mappings, we suggest doing a content freeze to ensure that the latest content is included in the migration. After the content’s integrity is verified, you can begin working as usual again.  

In the planning phase, together we need establish a “definition of done” for the migration. This can vary depending on what kind of content is prioritized to be migrated. To verify that our “definition of done” has been met, it will require a combination of Epinova and site editors from your side to test the migrated content. We typically aim for an 80% migration goal, but this can also depend on many factors.
